The India Meteorological Department's (IMD) rain predictions are notably unreliable due to challenges in simulating tropical weather and inadequate infrastructure compared to wealthier nations, as highlighted by a recent paper by economists Manuel Linsenmeier and Jeffrey Schrader. While seasonal forecasts in India outperform those in richer countries, short-term predictions lag significantly. Improvements in observation networks and frequency could enhance forecast accuracy.
