Pooja Bhatt says she watched theatre audiences 'whistle, scream' for sister Alia Bhatt during Gangubai Kathiawadi

Pooja Bhatt heaped praises on Alia Bhatt and her film Gangubai Kathiawadi. Here's what she has said.

Actor-filmmaker Pooja Bhatt has praised her half-sister, actor Alia Bhatt, and her recently-released film Gangubai Kathiawadi. In a new interview, Pooja said that the audiences in multiplexes whistled and shouted during the show. Pooja also said that she watched the film 'first-day first-show'.

Alia Bhatt played the titular role in filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Gangubai Kathiawadi. The film is based on a chapter from writer S Hussain Zaidi's book Mafia Queens of Mumbai. Alia features as Gangubai, one of the most powerful, loved, and respected madams from Kamathipura during the 1960s.

Speaking with Aaj Tak, Pooja spoke about Alia's performance, "Usually, you don't expect multiplex audiences to whistle and shout, but while watching Gangubai, I heard whistles, screams, yelling in the theatres. This proves that the film has hit the mark and how. She (Alia) was a girl, and now, she is a woman and she is dazzling." About the film, Pooja said that she watched it 'first-day first show. She also added that she was delighted and proud that out of the 50% capacity (in theatres), 80% of the viewers were women.

Responding to a question whether Alia is taking the Pooja Bhatt legacy forward, she said, "My father has always said that every generation has to be better to the other. So I think the Bhatt legacy lives on and I hope we get better with every generation."

Gangubai Kathiawadi also features Ajay Devgn, Vijay Raaz, Seema Pahwa, and Shantanu Maheshwari. It is co-produced by Bhansali Productions and Jayantilal Gada's Pen India Limited.

The Hindustan Times review read, "Alia Bhatt, who showed her acting prowess in Highway as her second film itself, has given a superlative performance as Gangubai. Yes, she does look a little too young at times for this roles but strong voice, the way she walks, the confidence she exudes from her smile, the pain she carries in her eyes --- Alia puts together quite an impressive show. Her nearly perfect diction, dialect, expressions, and how she emotes anger, rage, happiness and helplessness leave you in awe of her screen presence."

Meanwhile, Pooja is best known for movies such as Daddy, Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin, Sadak, Tamanna, and Zakhm among many others. She was last seen in the Netflix drama series Bombay Begums. Along with Pooja, the series also stars Shahana Goswami, Amruta Subhash, Plabita Borthakur, and Aadhya Anand, who play five women from different sections of society. The show is directed by Alankrita Shrivastava. She will sonbe seen with Sunny Deol in R Balki's film.
