A senior district police official said the crash took place about 15 km from Karaikudi and that all 11 victims, eight women, two men and a child, died on the spot, reported news agency PTI.

The agency cited a police official as saying that over 20 passengers were taken to government hospitals for treatment.

Speaking about the cause of the collision, the official said, “it was a head-on collision, the reason is not clear, we are looking into it.”

This is the second major head-on bus collision in Tamil Nadu within a week.

Earlier this week, six people died and more than 50 were injured in a similar crash in Tenkasi district, according to news agency ANI.

At least 55 passengers were on board the two buses involved in that accident. Several of the injured were admitted to hospital with severe trauma, including fractures to their arms, legs and head.

NDTV reported that the Tenkasi crash occurred when a private bus travelling from Madurai to Senkottai and another heading from Tenkasi towards Kovilpatti rammed into each other. The impact left both vehicles mangled, prompting a major rescue operation.
