A prisoner out on parole was shot dead while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Bihar's Patna on Thursday morning.
The prisoner was admitted for treatment at Paras Hospital when unidentified assailants shot and killed him inside the building.
Patna senior superintendent of police Kartikeya Kumar reached the scene of the crime to assess the situation. He told the news agency ANI that an investigation into the matter was underway.
"A criminal named Chandan Mishra, resident of Buxar district, admitted to Paras Hospital for treatment, and members of the rival gang shot him. He is undergoing treatment...He was shot multiple times. The assailants are being identified with the help of the Buxar Police. It cannot be ruled out that the security guards of the police were involved in this incident. We will investigate this angle also," Central range (Patna) IG Jitendra Rana told the media in the morning. The victim later succumbed to the bullet wounds.
The incident comes amid a slew of such shootings in the state, which is due for assembly poll in a couple of months. The opposition has been targeting the Nitish Kumar-led government over the deteriorating law and order situation in the state. And someone coming into a hospital and shooting a parolee, that too in the state capital, is certainly not a good look.
