Cybersecurity researchers say GhostPairing is especially dangerous because it spreads through trust.

A new WhatsApp scam, called GhostPairing, exploits the app's device-linking feature to gain unauthorized access to users' accounts without hacking. Attackers trick victims into linking their devices through deceptive messages and fake webpages. With this access, they can read and send messages undetected. Users are urged to regularly check their linked devices and verify unexpected messages.
