CAR T-cell therapy is effective even when chemotherapy fails. It uses a patient's own immunity cells (the T-cells in the title), reengineers them, and arms them with the ability to fight off cancer. The issue, worldwide, has been the cost of doing this. Now, two Indian experts - Rahul Purwar at IIT-Bombay and Dr Gaurav Narula of Tata Memorial Hospital - have collaborated to create a low-cost therapy that has brought the price down to about ₹40 lakh per person. Efforts are on to reduce it further, make it accessible to all. Meanwhile, their therapy has received sanction to be commercially rolled out for use against certain blood cancers.
