Electric and CNG vehicles remain allowed in Delhi under GRAP Stage IV, with both private and commercial vehicles permitted to operate and enter the city.

Electric and CNG vehicles will continue to be allowed to operate in Delhi despite the stricter pollution-related vehicle curbs introduced alongside Stage IV of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). The Delhi government recently announced additional restrictions on vehicle movement and entry into the national capital, even though GRAP Stage IV was already in force due to deteriorating air quality.

Electric and CNG Vehicles Remain Exempt

Under the current rules, electric and CNG vehicles are permitted to operate within Delhi without restrictions. This applies to both private and commercial vehicles and covers those registered in Delhi as well as vehicles registered outside the city. Owners of electric cars, CNG cars, two-wheelers, and commercial vehicles can continue to drive and enter Delhi during the ongoing curbs.

Impact of GRAP Stage IV on Cleaner Vehicles

GRAP Stage IV places strict limits on the movement of BS3 petrol and BS4 diesel vehicles across Delhi-NCR. However, these restrictions do not apply to vehicles powered by electricity or CNG. As a result, electric and CNG vehicles are allowed to ply on city roads even as other categories face operational bans. The rules apply uniformly across private and commercial segments.

Commercial Electric, CNG and LNG Vehicles

Commercial vehicles running on CNG, LNG, or electricity are also allowed to operate in Delhi under the current regulations. This includes goods carriers and public transport vehicles, subject to compliance with other applicable conditions.

However, commercial vehicles carrying construction material remain restricted from entering the city, regardless of the fuel type used. This restriction has been introduced to limit dust and particulate pollution from construction-related transport.

Why Electric and CNG Vehicles Are Allowed

Allowing electric and CNG vehicles to operate is part of the strategy to reduce vehicular emissions while ensuring mobility is not completely disrupted. These vehicles are considered lower-emission alternatives compared to petrol and diesel vehicles. Authorities have said the restrictions will remain under review and may be adjusted depending on air quality trends in the coming days.
