PUNE: The Maharashtra government on Friday issued a notification for the demerger of Uruli Devachi and Phursungi villages from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) while announcing a separate municipal council for them. The urban development department (UDD) of the state government notified the demerger of the two villages while announcing the formation of a separate municipal council for them.

Whereas the residents of Uruli Devachi and Phursungi remain divided over their demerger from the PMC with some welcoming the move even as others oppose it. Supporters of the demerger are of the view that it will benefit the villages while opponents feel that the move is ‘politically motivated’. While the two villages have been demerged from the PMC, the corporation’s garbage depots – which are part of these villages and have been a magnet for controversy – have been retained with the PMC by the state government.
Uruli Devachi and Phursungi were among the 11 villages merged with the PMC in 2017. Together, they have a population of about two to two-and-a-half lakhs. Some political leaders, including the then minister of state Vijay Shivthare, took the lead in demanding a separate municipal council for these villages. As Shivthare is part of the chief minister Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, his demand was accepted. Following the announcement of a separate municipal council, all PMC works in Uruli Devachi and Phursungi have ground to a halt.
