British actor Maggie Smith, an award winning Shakespearian actor and double Oscar winner who later appeared in the Harry Potter films, has died aged 89, the BBC reported on Friday.

"It is with great sadness we have to announce the death of Dame Maggie Smith. She passed away peacefully in hospital early this morning, Friday 27th September," her sons Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens said in a statement.

She was born December 28, 1934, in Ilford, England and was a renowned British actor with a career spanning over six decades.
She gained prominence with her roles in films like The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1969), winning her first Academy Award, and A Room with a View (1985).
