Egypt has reportedly deployed Chinese HQ-9B long-range air-defense systems in the Sinai Peninsula, significantly enhancing Cairo’s ability to monitor Israeli airspace and control regional air operations. The deployment, first reported in mid-September by Defence Security Asia, marks one of Egypt’s most notable military moves in recent years. Two full HQ-9B batteries were positioned across key areas of Sinai, placing them within striking range of Gaza and southern Israel. Egypt, which mediated indirect Israel-Hamas talks, fears Israeli operations could trigger population transfers into Sinai. President el-Sisi warned the scenario would be catastrophic for national stability. Analysts view the Chinese system deployment as a strategic signal to Israel and the U.S., with Netanyahu reportedly lobbying Trump to reverse the move. Israeli media called the HQ-9B a game-changing threat, while the U.S., balancing its role as Israel’s ally and ceasefire guarantor, has remained silent.
