Carney tries to make Trump jealous with Xi Jinping meet, days after US' new tariff attack on Canada?

After years of diplomatic chill, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Chinese President Xi Jinping have met for the first time in eight years, signaling a possible reset in China–Canada relations. The two leaders met on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific summit in South Korea, calling for “pragmatic and constructive” engagement between their countries. Carney, who became prime minister in March, accepted Xi’s invitation to visit China, though no date has been announced yet. The meeting comes amid trade tensions and lingering mistrust stemming from the 2018 Huawei controversy, when Canada arrested Huawei executive Meng Wenzhou, and China detained two Canadians in response.
