Greece’s armed forces fume: Why are Greek soldiers marching in uniform against their own government?

Hundreds of veterans and active-duty soldiers marched through the streets of Athens on Saturday to protest a controversial draft bill aimed at reforming Greece’s military sector. The demonstrators, carrying national flags and banners, voiced strong opposition to Defence Minister Nikos Dendias and warned that the proposed legislation would worsen working conditions for troops and threaten the rights of those serving in uniform. The protest featured passionate speeches from military personnel, including soldier Alkis Kostopoulos, who condemned what he called the “inferiorisation” and “devaluation” of the profession.
