The United States launched retaliatory airstrikes in Syria on December 19 after a deadly attack on American troops earlier this month. U.S. Central Command said Operation Hawkeye targeted ISIS linked fighters, infrastructure and weapons sites using nearly 100 precision munitions, striking more than 70 locations across central Syria. The operation involved F 15 and A 10 fighter jets, Apache helicopters and HIMARS rocket systems, with support from Jordanian air forces. The strikes followed the killing of three U.S. soldiers on December 13 near Palmyra. Washington said the action was aimed at deterring further attacks and dismantling ISIS capabilities.
