Bukele mocks UNGA, skips 'Pointless' 2025 event, shares past speech online

El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele made waves by skipping the 2025 UN General Assembly, posting last year’s speech online and branding the annual event “pointless.” In a viral 2024 UN clip, Bukele highlighted rising lawlessness and the breakdown of public order in cities across the so-called “free world”. Bukele, who calls himself the “world’s coolest dictator,” mocked the UN on social media and said nations should waste no time rewatching his previous remarks. The snub comes as Bukele’s tough crime policies draw both Trump’s public praise and human rights scrutiny, with El Salvador’s jails now hosting many migrants deported from the US.
