Two small planes collided midair near Fort Morgan Municipal Airport in Colorado. One of the planes caught fire, while the other sustained heavy damage.

UPDATE: Two small planes collided mid-air while attempting to land at Fort Morgan Municipal Airport in Colorado on Sunday, leaving one person dead and three others injured, ABC News reported.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), a Cessna 172 and an Extra Flugzeugbau EA300 were both approaching the airport when they struck each other in flight.

The Morgan County Sheriff's Office issued a statement, saying, "We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the victim in this tragic event. We would like to express our gratitude to all the agencies that helped with this situation. Additionally, we want to thank the citizens who assisted in trying to extinguish the fire until the fire department and first responders arrived on the scene.”

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the cause of the collision.

So far, the names of those involved have not been released, pending notification of next of kin and the ongoing investigation.
