At least three people were killed while eight were injured after unidentified shooters opened fire from a passing boat into a crowded dockside restaurant in North Carolina's Southport on Saturday, authorities said.
As per the preliminary reports, the vessel pulled up near the American Fish Company restaurant, one of Southpost's most popular hangout spots, around 10 pm and opened fire on diners before speeding away.
After the gunfire, the boat reportedly fled north along the Intracoastal Waterway
A person of interest is being interrogated
Star News reported that as of Saturday night, no suspects had been apprehended, but a person of interest was being questioned in connection with the incident, according to City Manager Noah Saldo.
The City of Southport issued an alert saying, “There are reports of an active shooter in the Southport Yacht Basin.”
“The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office is assisting the City of Southport Police Department, along with multiple law enforcement agencies throughout the county. Please keep all those affected, as well as our first responders, in your thoughts and prayers.”
A report from the State Port Pilot, a local newspaper, stated that the suspect’s vessel had been stationary in the water for nearly an hour before the shooting began.
