Sanford's grandfather enlisted in the Navy during World War II, and his uncle was also a former Marine. A Marine Corps spokeswoman told CNN that Thomas Jacob Sanford has received several decorations over a long period of time. According to the documents, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, and other honors.
