India’s Ministry of External Affairs has responded cautiously after the United States revoked the sanctions waiver for the Chabahar Port project in Iran. The waiver, first granted in 2018, allowed India to pursue the project without violating U.S. sanctions, enabling a vital trade route to Afghanistan and Central Asia while bypassing Pakistan. With Washington now ending the exemption effective September 29, the MEA said it is “presently examining the implications.” The move could significantly affect India’s regional connectivity ambitions and strain New Delhi’s strategic options.
