Purple Cap in WPL 2026
The WPL Purple Cap is the tournament’s live marker for the season’s leading wicket-taker, updated after every match and worn by the bowler sitting atop the wickets chart at that moment. It’s objective, but not simplistic: if two or more bowlers finish with the same wicket tally, the Purple Cap is decided by better economy rate; if economy is also identical, the higher strike rate settles it.
Across the first three seasons, the Purple Cap has belonged to three different stories. In 2023, Mumbai Indians’ Hayley Matthews claimed the inaugural cap with 16 wickets in 10 innings. In 2024, Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s Shreyanka Patil topped the list with 13 wickets in eight innings, her best spell 4 for 12, and announced herself as a high-ceiling Indian spinner. In 2025, Mumbai again produced the bowler leader, with Amelia Kerr finishing as Purple Cap winner with 18 wickets in 10 matches.
In a short WPL league phase, the Purple Cap is won on repeatability: strike early, hit the middle overs hard, and keep the damage down when wickets don’t come. That’s why teams value bowlers who take wickets in clusters without leaking runs when batters swing hard.
