Hungary has issued a strong warning against Ukraine’s bid to join the European Union. Speaking in Budapest, Gergely Gulyas, head of the Hungarian Prime Minister’s Office, said Hungary is prepared to block Ukraine’s EU accession alone if necessary, calling a proposed 2027 entry “impossible and unacceptable.” He also criticised Kyiv’s request for $800 billion in reconstruction funding, arguing Europe is being asked to bankroll Ukraine for years at enormous cost. Budapest insists it will not support policies that burden EU taxpayers, deepening divisions within the bloc over Ukraine’s future and EU enlargement.
